Have you had the Onsen Experience? How does Australia’s only Alpine Onsen sound? Dinner Plain’s very own luxury oasis awaits. Meg and I checked it out on a recent trip to Mt Hotham as guests of the Onsen.
Having spent many holidays in Japanese ski resorts we’ve had numerous and varied Onsen experiences. From very basic hotel basement bathing to the most oppulent ski resorts like Lotte Arai… Its pretty clear to us then that not all Onsens were created equal.
This lead us to check out the Dinner Plain Onsen Retreat and Spa – winner of the 2019 World Luxury Spa Awards for Best Mountain Retreat.
From the moment you arrive at Dinner Plain and remove your footwear (very Japanese) you enter a relaxed a peaceful space. There is fresh Alpine Water and tea to make sure you are hydrated for your soak or treatment. The friendly staff will show you through to your little piece of tranquillity.
The Retreat’s Menu for health and beauty covers all the treatments you’d expect from a world-class Spa: Massage, Facial, Foot, and Body treatments can be enjoyed individually or for a truly blissful experience packages are available.
Meg enjoyed the Alpine Foot and Calf Recovery treatment and after 4 days on the snowboard…let’s just say she was in Heaven!
I relaxed (moments from sleep) with a Muscle Focus Massage for my aching back, stiff neck, and hunched shoulders. I walked out feeling like a new man, ready to challenge those Black Runs up the road at Hotham.
We then enjoyed the 38 degree Japanese-inspired outdoor pool to soak away sore muscles (the ones you didn’t know you had). If you are lucky enough to visit while snow is falling…this is the closest thing to a Japanese Onsen experience you can get (minus the nudity!)
The Onsen Retreat and Spa is also a Gym with lap pool and Yoga classes available.
At $45 for a 2-hour bathing session (indoor, outdoor, sauna, swimming pool) this will be WAY more relaxing than a few Après rounds at the pub (and a lot better for you). Better yet, if you book a package or a 60 min appointment then bathing is complimentary!
